Security Chief Clovis
The RookSecurity Chief Clovis is responsible for the Checquy Group’s internal security during the crisis caused by Grafter infiltration. After the attackers at the reception are found to have Grafter implants, Clovis organizes a screening program for the organization, beginning with the Court and extending to its wider membership. His role is defined by the practical problem of detecting infiltrators inside a secretive institution whose trusted personnel and systems may already be compromised.
Identity and Role
Clovis is the Checquy’s Security Chief, and his work brings him into direct contact with Rook Thomas as the organization responds to the threat. He appears as a composed and businesslike official: when he visits her office, he stands among the piled files and weapons with what the narration describes as exquisite stillness. The scene contrasts his measured manner with the emergency’s disorder and the intrusive measures it requires.
The evidence establishes Clovis’s responsibilities through the security protocol he reports to Rook Thomas. It does not detail his personal history or supernatural abilities; his characterization instead rests on his position, his operational decisions, and his insistence on thoroughness.
The Screening Protocol
Clovis tells Rook Thomas that the new protocol will examine every Checquy member for Grafter implants. The examinations are to be conducted in-house and are expected to burden the medical staff for months. Because the organization cannot assume its own doctors are beyond suspicion, groups of three observers will be assigned at random to examination rooms to monitor the examiners. Each result must also be approved by every Checquy doctor and a randomly selected civilian medical practitioner, with results sent to thirty-five doctors around the world.
The safeguards are designed to prevent the screening process itself from being compromised. Clovis acknowledges that it is unlikely every Checquy doctor is a Grafter mole, but the civilian doctor offers an additional check if that unlikely possibility proves true. The layers of observation and review turn a medical examination into an institutional security measure, responding to the possibility that agents could be concealed not only among ordinary members but among those responsible for testing them.
The protocol begins with the Court. Clovis says its members will be screened starting the next day, and Rook Thomas is asked to prepare. She requests that her own examination be scheduled for the afternoon so she can sleep first. Guards are to remain at her office doors until then, placing her routine under the same heightened security that governs the wider organization.
Context and Significance
The screening follows the discovery that the attackers at the reception had implants, prompting Rook Thomas to conclude that the Checquy had been infiltrated by the Grafters. The suspicion extends beyond the attackers: if the organization has been penetrated, even its Retainers may be potential traitors. Clovis’s response takes that fear from speculation to procedure, establishing a way to test members while limiting the opportunity for tampering.
The plan cannot guarantee that every Grafter agent will have an implant, a limitation Clovis explicitly recognizes. It is therefore a starting point rather than a complete resolution. Its significance lies in how it makes institutional vulnerability operationally visible: the Checquy must scrutinize its own membership, medical staff, and judgments at a time when trust can no longer be taken for granted.
